Oh, really? Let me tell you for the first two days post-disaster there were no buses. No one even knew there was power uptown unless one was willing to walk for several miles and find out for themselves. There was (and still is) no information, no power, no internet, no cell phone coverage, nothing. Thankfully, there are now a few maniac buses plowing through the burnt-out traffic light intersections, but sadly many of these buses are packed beyond capacity.
I live in the Village. I got up on Tuesday morning and starting walking north until I found cell service. Eventually I found power at 27th and Broadway and got a cup of coffee and a bagel. Yes, it was a little bit of a hike, but I had nothing else to do. I’m sure many of those people on the LES have family or friends in other neighborhoods with power.
Yes, there are serious problems and I’m hoping that the power comes on as soon as possible (if only so I can go home). However, there are comparatively easy steps that one can take to ameliorate the situation.
I just find it crazy at how people in the L.E.S are suffering yet 20+ blocks away its business as usual and as if nothing happened. I crossed the williamsburg bridge into BK yesterday and you would not even think there was a disaster just a few days ago.
There s nothing crazy about that
I've been through Andrew, Katrina, Wilma and every single hurricane that has hit south florida It sucks to be without power. I've been on both ends from not losing power while the rest of the city is in the dark to being one of the last people to get their power back. It s what it is.
Crime could rise probably but that won't resore power any faster.
Yes, I wondered myself why people were saying looting was not happening. I have friends in Coney Island who saw it (prescription drugs, mostly) and there have been news stories.
Mayor Bloomberg said in his press briefing approx. an hour ago that National Guard will be distributing food and water in the Chinatown area.
That is why they say have three days of supplies. That is the normal time it takes to have contractors arrive and setup distribution of emergency food. First will be MREs and boxed snacks etc;drinking water. Here at least the national guard from other areas of the state come in and distribute those at specific sites .
None, I try to avoid that intersection as much as possible, but I have heard gun shots on occasion.
How do you know gunshots came from that area? You do realize living in such a densely packed area like Chinatown sound can travel right ?
