Oh Dear God, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I sure as hell hope that nobody, place, or town would want to emulate the culture, or anything for that matter, of L.A. I swear if I have to live in one more town that offers nothing more than value meals and overpriced coffee with total incompetent service, I'm moving to the woods to sit on a porch with a shotgun!!! I spent 4 1/2 years in Orlando, about the same here in L.A. and am leaving in a few months. I can't wait to get to NY and I have faith that the good people there ( Elvira I'm talking to you!! ) will let their voice be heard when given the opportunity to speak out against commercialization.

By the way the entertainment debate breaks down about like this. Trust me.

Film - L.A. and NY are about even. L.A. probably has more films but the majority are crappy films you will never ever see. There are more film schools in L.A. than anywhere else. As for movies most of the public will actually see, more and more are being shot on location in all different areas. But as casting goes there is almost an equal amount of Films from L.A and NY.

T.V. - Definately L.A. Honestly there is no debating this. Yes, NY does have some T.V. shows (Rescue Me is one of my favorites!) and the ones they have are all of excellent quality and production value. I personally prefer quality over just watching garbage. In sheer numbers L.A. has a load more T.V. shows.

Commercials - L.A.

Soap Operas - NY

Theatre - NY

LOL...You go, madmj! And nice summary too.

I always thought that esp since NYU's stature has increased that the two top film schools were UCLA and NYU. And yes, the two cities seem about equal to me too.

I can see what you mean about TV programs though--and of course theater...

NYC is also home to ABC, NBC, and Fox-3 of the 4 largest television channels. CNN is in Atlanta.
NYC is home to Comedy Central, MTV, BET, YES, MSG, etc.

NYC headquarters many of them television channels you watch, Pete.

First of all, IMO NYC is WAY more glamorous than LA. LA sucks and always will. perhaps the attitude of SoCal and its associations to materialism have prompted the analogy, however, I still feel like NYC is a much more educated and gritty place than LA. You have to be a bit gritty to make in NYC, when you're pushing through the crowds. Its not that tough listening to your radio in a benz on the 405.

LA is a major city but is still surrounded by suburbs. Poor people live in East LA or maybe Hollywood. To live the "good life," you must live in the housing developments. What kind of luxe housing do they have in the "city" proper there? I don't think they do. So typical LA residents rely on cars and live in houses, and cannot just walk around like you can in NYC. IN that respect, they are like most other places in the country.

Thumbs up True New York Film

Those interested in this topic should check out the film "Home" which reflects New York as it really is and that is a place in constant change. It's truly a place that has NEVER remained the same for ANYONE, not for long anyway...
Take a look at the city through the eyes of a native New Yorker and an Irish immigrant who made this film together on a shoestring budget and managed to get some interesting folks on board to talk about their New York.
You can't buy this film anywhere except from the filmmakers at "HOME"
"Home" premiered on PBS channel thirteen but still does not have a distributor.
Beautiful cinematography and thought provoking candid interviews with Mike Myers, Susan Sarandon, Liam Neeson, Pete Hamill, Frank McCourt, Malachy McCourt, Rosie Perez, Colin Quinn, Alfred Molina, Fran Lebowitz, Elaine Kaufman, Drew Nieporent, Armand DiMele and Vinny Vella.

Sorry, but NY is turning into LA and maybe worse. Nothing but 20 something frat boys and soroity chicks live south of 59st.

Plus, we still have the ghetto-fab essance left over that comes into the city from the crevesaces of Brooklyn and the Bronx.

Not a inviting city anymore....

Actually LA's more like a bunch of suburbs bunched into a major city. It's pretty decentralized and doesn't have a real "city center" like we have in Manhattan.
