Default Confused New Yorker

I've lived in Westchester County pretty much my whole life (with an exception to College Park, MD during college). I love New York. I just got a job in Manhattan and I'm trying to figure out where I should be looking to get my own place (still living with mom) Problem is finanaces and being spoiled by Westchester's convenience and green grass. Where can I move that'll allow me to make new friends and be close to work (midtown). I was looking into Queens (Astoria) or somewhere in Brooklyn... I'm just not sure where I'd be more comfortable. Any suggestions??

Bronx, try river dale, woodlawn, morris park

Actually better yet, try marble hill. It is cheaper, has street parking, and has easy access to highways to get to Westchester. And it is close to the metro north.

Van Cortlandt Village, Bronx, in the northwest part of the borough. A BXM3 bus stops by 4 or so times an hour during commuting hours because the neighborhood is filled with folks who work in Midtown. If you have any questions on the neighborhood, PM me.

I'd say look into Glendale in Queens, its near a large cemetery, but has a very nice feeling of living in a small town. Lots of Brownstones and cute restaurants. Its overall residents are from Russia, Whites, and Hispanics. I believe its a middle to upper middle class.
