Depends on the kind of building. If it's a ritzy building, probably closer to $50. Can you ask your neighbors?

We always give our super $100. He is so lovely and very nice to my kids. Whenever we have anything happen here is here in a flash to fix it. He also just tipped us off on a bigger apartment in our building so we scored it with no broker fees yay!

Nothing.

I would give a NYC super NOTHING.

Now when I was in LA, I gave my resident property managers money, because they were actually USEFUL.

What has the super done to warrant any tipping?? Everybody I talk to find their supers to be useless and only call them for extreme emergencies only.

Ditto.
I think we did $75 this year, and another $60 for a kind of porter-type guy.
The latter needs the money far more.

I gave my Super $50 a few years ago. He was new in the building and I though he would take care of the place the same way the old one did but he hasn't done squat. The building is dirty, he only mops the floors in the main hallway (rarely), there are dog urine stains in the stairwell that lasts for weeks, etc. The guy is incompetent. Our old Super would mop all of the floors every other morning, the place was spotlessly clean, he would keep disorderly tenants in check and would make sure riffraff never loitered in front of our building. He was an intimidating guy but he was well liked.

I haven't given my new Super anything in the past 2 seasons. He has done nothing for me or the building. Why should I reward him for his laziness? I don't believe you should just tip someone just because it is customary. They should deserve it, and he does not.

Hmmmm, let's see.....tip him for only mopping the first floor lobby when either HPD or management is due to.come by?

Tip him for taking advantage of his fellow Latinos by making them pay him a fee in order to get an apartment?

Tip him for not regularly changing the garbage w/o goading?

Tip him for going through tenant's mailboxes?

Tip him for going into tenant's apartments without their knowledge?

Tip him for stealing things out of said apartments?

Tip him for making his wife change and set out the garbage instead of him?

Tip him for being downright nosey?

Tip him for being downright lazy?

Tip him for being a total scuzzball by lusting and undressing women with his eyes?

Tip him for keeping it freezing in the apartments because he likes it cold even when the temps are in the 30's and he refuses to send up heat?

Tip him for stealing cable and possibly electric services from other tenants and Con Ed?

Tip him for not liking African Americans enough that he'll call them the Spanish word for "*****" while passing?

This man would never see a red.cent from me. Unfortunately there are too many Supers of his ilk in New York City.
