Im considering paying around $1600 in rent for a roommate situation in a "lux" building with 2 other people instead of paying $1400-$1500 for a studio or for a roommate in a "non-luxury" building.

If I pay around $1,600 w/ roommates (including utilities), I'd have a place that already has a gym and laundry facility. If I opt for a more normal type of living at around the $1,500 tange, I'd have to pay for a gym membership and then find a place to do laundry and then also pay for heat, electricity, etc.

Now this could possibly work assuming these lux. buildings include gym access in your rent. If not, I dont know

I live in a full-service luxury building and the gym/pool access is not included.

I think you ought to keep the non-financial aspects in mind. Life isn't always about figuring out the maximum way to save a dollar. I'm guessing that you're very young, and in that case good roommates can potentially be a terrific benefit. Also, I've always had a laundry room in my buildings, and I consider it an essential just in terms of saving time and aggravation.

Also, it occurs to me that if you make enough money to spend in on a gym membership (which I consider frivolous), then $100 or so per month shouldn't make that much difference to you.

In house gyms are usually extra...and more than the nearby NYSC.
Unless you are talking about the afterthought kind of thing: 2 treadmills, 2 ellipticals, and a rowing machine.

Luxury with lot of roomates is super kewl brah. Every, and mean EVERYBODY does it! That's how you get to live the Manhattan experience these days. Chicks dig it a lot. After all, privacy and living on your own is so passe.
I say embrace the new trend and go for it!
