Hello,

To my knowledge, New York City is predominantely Democratic, yet a small Republican scene exists. Just wondering the following, among the small scene of New Yorkers who are active Republicans (such as active club members),

1. what type of ideology do New York City Republicans tend to have?

2. What are New York City Republicans like in terms of ethnicity?

Thanks

1. Lower taxes and fewer social programs and the abolition of all controls on rent.
2. White

1) Yes on less social programs and lower taxes. Also the idea that the gov't (in this case city gov't) needs to leave people alone in terms of how they live their lives (there are a couple of very contradictory ideas in this regard among "traditional" repubs IMO). Repubs tend to be more traditional in terms of marrying young and having a large family as well, just like any other area of the country. Also tend to stick to their own kind, if you will. Or at least not try and put up the facade of having open arms to everybody and anybody the way Libs and so called "progressives" do. Oh and less restrictions on gun ownership.

2) You would be surprised how many non-whites have conservative ideals, putting aside some social programs for a second.

Fiscally conservative but not usually very socially conservative. Most NYC Republicans I know are in favor of women's health rights and gay marriage for example.

Mostly white ethnic, especially Italian and Irish people from outside of Manhattan and a healthy sized contingent of transplant Wall Street people.

Ideologically NYC Republicans are far more moderate on social issues than their Sunbelt counterparts. Its not sex, drug, and rock and roll down at the GOP, but they have made their peace with gay marriage, abortion rights, and the like. They're also more moderate in terms of the safety net issues. They want Medicaid, affordable housing, extended unemployment, etc., but thier issue is the cost of these things. They don't debate whether they should even exist, like they might in Texas or someplace. And they've adopted a moderate stance towrard unions. They sure don't love them, since the unions usually tilt Democratic. But again, they don't debate seriously whether to make New York a right-to-work state like many of the Sunbelt states. And they are always in favor of lower taxes, as KK above said.

That moderation is the only way thye GOP can survive here. Guiliani, Bloomberg were both moderate Republicans by national standards. But both, IMHO, govern/governed MOST of the time like centrist Democrats, which is how I would describe most NYC voters.

And yes, the NYC GOP is overwhelmingly white--and heavily (but not exclusively) Catholic.

This ^^^

I would also add to # 1) More lax gun laws, charter schools, they are also usually more in favor of far-reaching police powers, they are also against legalization of MJ (Long & Staten island republicans recently killed a bill seeking to legalize medical MJ). They usually demonize the unions too (except the Police and Fire dept ones, those are their domain), among many other things, which are for the most part not good for the city.

1) It varies widely, but one thing we do have in common is that they are pro-gun ownership

2) It varies also, but I can tell you I have never met a Black Republican in NYC. But White, Spanish, Asian yes.
