I had a boyfriend from Riverdale and he said he felt weird saying he was from the Bronx because if he did and then people found out he was from Riverdale, they thought he was trying seem more tough or whatever. But if he said he was from Riverdale, people thought he was being snooty, so it was a no win.
that's kind of how I feel being partially raised in westchester, but one of the less affluent towns...
I think it's common for people from lesser known areas to just say that they're from a more famous area nearby. Sorta like how someone from Morrisania or Mott Haven just usually say they're from "South Bronx", while someone from Northeastern Queens just says they're from "Flushing". Nothing new
Sort of the border of the two neighborhoods maybe?
Or, some people think of Midwood as a part of Flatbush...
Either way it's close enough. Maybe people refer to it as Flatbush since it's predominately black over there.
But Ave H East of Utica Ave is definitrly not Flatbush to my understanding.

People seem to usually specify Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, etc. My mom used to live in Bayside and she never referred to it as "Flushing". Maybe Pomonok is lumped in with Flushing, though.
But people in The Bronx often don't use their neighborhood names. I've heard people refer to Wakefield and Williamsbridge as "Gun Hill", a woman I know from Mott Haven calls it "Brook Ave", a woman I know from Longwood calls it "near Hunts Point".
oh well, there's always kingsbridge heights, so how about a kingsbridge heights gardens for good measure. ridiculous, isn't it? as if riverdale were a lesser scarsdale, a lesser rye, or an extension of the upper west side.
It is good business to always amplify your neighborhood, even if you have to lie. I am thinking of a friend who bought a co-op in Forest Hills. No she didn't, it was in Rego Park.
I'm at Ninety toid and Toid and I say Upper East Side because if I say Yorkville many people think I live in upstate New York...or worse, Virginia.
I know someone in BedStuy who believes himself to be a hipster and I guess thinks the world revolves around wherever he is. He and his friends refer to the UES as "Rhode Island." So obnoxious.
