What happened to New York's slave descendants? Was there ever a particular black population in NY that was known for being descendant of New York's slaves or did they eventually just blend in with the blacks who migrated from the southern states?

Some history:

Slavery in New York

There is a former slave plantation on Shelter Island that is still owned by the original slave holding family.

It's called Sylvester Manor:

Most people think of US slavery in the southern context with masses of people working on plantations. Northern slavery was much different and not nearly as widespread. As there was no need for large numbers of slaves as there were no plantations. Not to mention that slavery was ended a good deal earlier than in the south obviously.

From what i understand new york did not have a very prominent black population until the 1st great southern migration period at the turn of the century.

As I mentioned earlier ,there were in fact northern plantations with house slaves, field slaves and slave quarters, just like down south. The one I linked to was on Long Island and it encompassed all of what is now Shelter Island... the whole Island ! One family owned it all.The family that owned it and lived there was in the Rum trade. The field slaves on Shelter Island harvested the trees on the island and made barrels which were shipped down to another plantation owned by the same family down in the islands where they made the rum.The barrels of rum were then shipped back to Europe( and all over the world) on ships owned by the same family and crewed by more slaves. It was a huge ,international slave dependent enterprise run from Shelter Island,NY.

I have also heard of other northern plantations in Rhode Island,Massachusetts and Connecticut. I think there were more northern plantations than most people think.

northeastern slavery was much more abusive.
that's why it ended quicker, but that didn't
make it friendlier either.
