There have been serious proposals to make the city and surrounding counties its own state. The district idea is absurd. DC will sooner become a state than NYC become a district.
I wouldn't mind it but upstate has the water. They'd have us by the balls there.
Proposals to make NYC a "district" have around the same seriousness level as proposals to cover it with a glass dome and relocate it to the moon, in short, nil.
I don't think it's such a weird question. NYC is a unique city in the United States. It is an international city. I've thought about this as well but more from a finance/business POV. IMO NYC should have special designations that would allow it to be more "business friendly" on an international scale.
There are so many corps of varied industries in NYC because NYC isn't business friendly?
Nassau,Suffolk and Westchester aren't even what you would call reliably dem. They swing back and forth as it is and regularly elect R county execs, US congressman, county legislatures, etc.Republicans only lost control of Nassau recently because of scandals and the Republicans are coming back into favor there.
This is true. Last election, our President won some EDs within those counties by a very slim margin.
I don't think NYS would necessarily become republican without NYC. Yes the Western part of the state is for the most part conservative, but counties along the Hudson not as much.
I think NYS would become a swing state.
Of course you'll have to cut the city out of that, but look at how heavily most of the populated counties in NY favored Obama. New York's blue streak isn't going anywhere.
Republicans would love it ! 8.5 million left leaning US citizens allowed no congressional representation. It would be the biggest voter disenfranchisement event ever. The icing on the cake would probably be NY state becoming a deep red state with 2 republican US senators.
All of NYC's internal issues would be decided by a congressional committee.
Pros:
Cons:
We'd lose representation and power in congress, taxation without representation.
with all NY being the msot gerrymandered area in the country there already is taxation without representation in much of NY.
Quote:
NY state would become Republican.
no it wouldn't Obama won upstate big
My idea would be for large parts of NYC and part of Western Nassau to split off and become it own city-state giving the North East a right leaning swing state with more then 2 million people.
