That's what I did last summer. Finding cheap sublets is way easier than finding a permanent place to live in. I rented an apt in Chinatown for 1000/month and the week before I arrived in NY I applied for several food industry jobs through Craigslist. I ended up getting an interview at The Standard Grill on my second day there are was hired and started working full time the following week. They paid me $15/hr as a hostess which ended up covering my rent and through my job I met so many people including celebrities. A short term stay in NY is completely feasible and if you have money saved up even better. You'll have a blast.

Thanks FashionSchool. That sounds like the ideal plan.

I did something similar last summer. Had money saved and was in between jobs. If you can go to NYC with money in your pocket, no pressure to make more or make anything, it's a great experience. It's one of the few places you can love living in for a stint even if you ultimately don't see it being for you. NYC wasn't for me long term. But I count living there for a few weeks as an awesome experience. And then I got out and missed Sandy, freezing temps etc

I don't think you can count being in the city several weeks as living here...

No, but it's a different level of experience then coming on vacation for a few days. And when you spend several months prior to arriving preparing, researching and fully expecting to ultimately live there, it's a full experience. I'm not trying to claim to be some ex-New Yorker. That would obviously be ridiculous. But seven weeks isn't exactly a little vacation, either.
