I wouldn't rent a market rate apartment along 2nd. You may get a lower rent, but you'll pay for it in noise, dirt, and inconvenience, and if you stay, they'll raise the rent on you, once the construction is finished. If you can buy cheaper because of it, I'd consider that, because you'll benefit from the construction once it's finished. If it's still possible to rent a regulated apartment, I'd consider that, for the same reason.

Thanks!
I recently moved to a street facing 1br on 82nd and 2nd. To be honest, the noise is not any worse than when I lived in East Village on the corner of 10th and A 3 years back. You get a lot more space for your money. I am paying 1/3 less than I did for a studio in Midtown East for 2/3 more space.

The construction fences are unsightly, and as other posters have mentioned - it can be loud. However this can be mitigated by sound proofing your windows (Google it there are a ton of DIY resources out there). Now that I have (nearly) soundproof windows, and run a box fan in my room - I can barely hear a thing.

Another great thing is that the construction greatly reduces the amount of foot traffic via tourists and the obnoxious NJ/LI morons (although some still make their way up here, however its a small fraction of what you`d see in Midtown/East Village/West Village).

No honey I'm not from NJ or LI. Nor an I in a rent controlled property.
I've been in NYC for almost 20 years and in many many apartments all over nyc.
Clearly you don't know nyc though as we were talking about the UES, not the UWS foooool.

Oh yes and you are a brand new poster that brought up this old thread.
Hmmm are you in real estate?
