As far as newer underground rappers, I'd invest in Action Bronson's entire catalog. Dude is ill as hell, and his flow & production is as New York as it gets.
Just to give you an FYI, my favorite Action Bronson song thus far is "The Rainmaker" from his "Well Done" mixtape from 2011 with Statik Selectah. The song brings back the essence for real. It's the type of jazzy piano/saxophone soul-filled beat an MC like Nas or Common would have loved to spit on in their prime time
NYC "underground gritty hip hop" is alive and well, but you can't rely on TV (and not much on radio either) to hear that kind of rap. With the internets it's really not that hard to find nowadays, you just have to separate the good music from the bad, depending on what kind of stuff you're into.
When it comes to NY artists that came out recently I really f*cks with artists such as Roc Marciano, KA (well, both of them aren't newcomers but they only blew up recently) Timeless Truth, Action, Meyhem, AG Da Coroner, Joey and Pro Era, Flatbush Zombies, surprisingly I like a couple of songs from them ASAP dudes...
Favorite artists at the moment are the Doppelgangaz, Ka, Bankai Fam and Skanks, different styles but they all represent that NYC vibe that I like

Don't sleep on Children Of The Night/World's Fair either!!!!! There's dudes take an interesting blend of New Era flow with some standout neo-old skool beats with dark overtones in some of them.
Queens seems to be on fire right now! Especially Brooklyn with Joey Bada$$ and the whole Pro Era collective, Flatbush Zombies, Underachievers, etc. And of course, the A$AP Mob empire out of Harlem.
Y'all New Yorkers about to be a real problem again I see
