Using the ratio of dollars/quality as the standard, my best is WOK 88 on the UES at 88th and Lex. A nice sitdown place with the best lunch deals every day til $4.30 (General Cho sweet version and House Special Chicken are my faves...but the Eggplant with Shrimp is terrrific for those who want a milder dish.)
Go for LUNCH though.

A 40 year old love though is WO HOP (downstairs one) on Mott Street. Crummy joint often with a line and the best Large Wonton Soups in New York. I found it in NEW YORK ON $10 A DAY...so you know how long it's been a favorite. Old fashioned Cantonese with enough MSG to give you chest pains just climbing out of the place. WONDERFUL! Lunchtime is filled with Lawyers from the courts and guards from the Tombs.

Really good dumplings at NEW GREEN BO, on Bayard a half block from Mott.

I like Asian Station (52nd & Lexington Ave in Midtown East) for the Chinese food. Never ever get sushi or Thai there. I also like Amazing 66 & Joe Shanghai in Chinatown.

M & T is now closed and has been replaced by a similar restaurant called Lao Dong Bei. I have not been, but the food is supposed to be revelatory

The question is the food still Qingdao/Shandong-style or not.

I wish I knew any place decent in Manhattan. I dragged someone to Noodletown, where I love their salt-baked shrimp, but we ordered some other things, and they were dreadful.

Hop Kee in Chinatown! It's been around and it's really good!

Go to Shanghai Cafe 100 Mott. Order the braised pork with tofu skin in brown sauce. The shredded beef with dry tofu, the soup dumplings and cold spicy cabbage. Great meal for 2 for about $40
