St. George is sketchy. If you are going to get one of the newer luxury apartments and stay in there most of the time you're good, but if you like to get out and about the neighborhood it's not good. High chance of getting robbed etc in that area at the wrong time of the day. Plus they are going to be building that stupid wheel/mega mall there which will add to headaches.

Well, offhand, I don't like the area by the library. During the day it's fine, but towards the evening, you start getting some shady-looking people around there. I haven't really been around the rest of the residential streets up on the hill too often, so I can't really speak on them. The streets going up the hill from Richmond Terrace seemed alright, I suppose, though not the greatest.

Yeah, west of Westervelt is New Brighton.

Park Hill doesn't have projects. Those buildings are as bad as some projects, but they're not run by NYCHA.

Back long ago (late 70's- early 80,) they were advertising affordable new apartments galore in or around St. George, obviously developers were going bankrupt right and left and the City and Fed was taking over. I did a little explore and there was high-rise after high-rise on the water just South of the Ferry Terminal, a quick walk. You looked down on their rooftops from the cliff-top road just East of Sailor's Haven area.

Firstly I couldn't figure how to get off the mountain and secondly thought, do I really want to be so inconvenient to Manhattan so I never did anything about it other than look. And we toured the then-weird Sailors' Haven of dilapidated rooming houses and sleazy bars all on steep streets.

Can somebody tell me about those high rise towers? Were they absorbed into Mitchell lama or did they become NYCHA or go private and market? Sorry, I cannot remember any of there names but it must have been THOUSANDS of apartments and they were new and nice with terraces and a terrific water view.

Does anyone live there?

Castleton Park Apartments....Mitchell-Lama rentals. They are the tallest buildings on Staten Island at 19 stories.

So I went ahead and rented an apt in a St. George luxury building for August 1st. New to the area so nothing to share yet but I'll be sure to come back and share how the neighborhood works out for me. Love that I will be less than a 5 min walk to the ferry and love the unobstructed views of the harbor. Key Foods recently opened on the ground level of the Pointe Condominiums, right down the street from the ferry. As the above link (previous post) shows, the revitalization of St. George is well underway.
