This is old news that has been posted on here before.
MTA needs to fill it's shortfalls and taxes drivers the hardest.
It's a pretty obnoxious system, and one that I do my best to circumvent their bridges to avoid paying them for a service they have no right gouging customers for.
It's not MTA alone. Some people in SI still believe that high tolls keep certain element out. Hence resident discount plans for Verrazano and commuter plans for the other 3 bridges. North Shore revitalization has done more good for SI that any high tolls could ever do.
If you dont live in SI and have to cross the Verrazano for work, yes, you are screwed. That's why many contractors would rather go to NJ than SI. Island's small business community does not see that as a bad thing. They get to charge higher prices.
