No surprise. Entertainment and cultural options and elevated housing as people seek to live where such options are plentiful all conspire to make the place unconducive to saving money.
i would love to know how they even come up with these income averages. there are so many ways to get income and not all are something anyone doing a study can randomely get a total on.
i do not know anyone ever surveyed about their finances do you?
it is not even part of the census.
my own feeling is those that produce these numbers have no clue and just guess.

the general census has no financial questions asked.
this one is done on a very limited basis.
in the entire country in 2011 only 150k were surveyed. with questions like did you ever smoke pot ,yes or no i can see this being an accurate sampling. but with an infinite amount of answers net worth and income can be all over the place.
you can interview in my own building with 300 families and come to no real conclusion the answers are so all over the place.
sure you can get a number but so what. our life styles differ ,our income differs ,our family size differs , our spending patterns differ and our net worth differs.
saying the average income is 50k is meaningless for any real decision making as far as what it means to you.
it is as meaningless as statements that tell you that you need 80% of your income when you retire .
who cares what income was , it has to be based on expenses , location and spending.
we live in bay terrace and median income is shown as 103k. but the median house price shown is 1.253 million.
think about it , there is no way a 100k median pretax income is buying a median 1.253 million dollar house ,and raising a family to boot. that makes no sense so who ever they asked in our area if they even asked anyone certainly did not reflect most of those in this area.
in fact as a retiree and not raising a family my numbers for our retirement to live in our area will be way higher then even that supposed median income with 2 people working..
if they asked us all for that financial info on the census we would really know what the numbers were but like this with such a tiny sampling in such a huge country no way are those numbers meaningful.
what can they even tell about all of us in nyc when in the entire country there was 150,000 people speaking for all of us on a question with infinite answers.

Average household size is 2.61 so a bit less than 4. Many of the households are childless. Places like the Upper East Side have an average household size of 1.7, the wealthier places often have fewer children.
I think average household size is based on a statistical "family of 4" with no regard for the actuality in a particular area. I could be wrong though.
That poor mangled .61 of a child is sad to behold. And his parents told him over and over again to stay away from the edge of the subway platform.
