So robberies / gunshots aren't occurring along the stretch of 116 south to 110, & 125th to 123rd?
Yes, they are.
You will have trouble finding out exactly how much because the development interests would like people to move in. The "everyblock" site has been closed down, which means no more notifications about actual local crime.
Shooting and other violent incidents tend to happen on the side streets moving toward Lenox, results of drugs, dice games, and so on.
At the end of the summer, there were a few, I don't know, "wilding" incidents ... ? Unsupervised teenagers, trashed things, harassed people, etc. The illegal dirt bike riders are still a problem, including on FDB and in Morningside Park.
No.
The Randolph Houses side street is not good, 114th east of FDB.
I would not consider anything above 124th or so.
Check out the building carefully if it is on a side street.
Never knew 114th between FDB and St. Nick had such a bad rep. My cousin's family lived in one of the now-shuttered Randolph Houses buildings for over a decade prior to being transferred to another NYCHA building. I hung out and played on that block plenty of times as a kid, but perhaps one is blind to the dangers around him/her as a kid...

Or it may have changed.
I personally think it is people coming from Lenox, but most believe it is from that block directly. I don't know why, because not so many people live there at this point. The Randolph tenants were re-located.
I should point out for the original poster we have many friends living on FDB, precisely those areas s/he mentioned.
It's safe if you don't mind dodging bullets and gluing your iPhone to your pocket
Have you been to Morningside Park in the past several years? What I've seen recently is a dog park, farmer's market and strollers. That said, I don't doubt that it's not a place to just hang around at night.
Thank you 'Harlem resident', your input has been helpful.
How is the stretch 125th - 135th "improving," exactly ? If you mean the new building complex on FDB and 125th, well, we will see what that produces.
Extensive renovations are happening at the projects on 131st. Professionals (even whites or CU students) are moving up from 125t St. A friend of mine bought a brownstone on 135th St. He rented almost all 4 apartments within a few days. Mostly were Columbia students.
I was intimately involved with Bethany Place, and got the run-down on the area from developers, church people, contractors. It will be marketed this summer. Quality of apartments will be high. Check it out when summer comes around. What a difference from the racoon-infested dilapidated buildings they were!!!

Morningside Park is still a rendez-vous point for nightly excursions up the rock. You want to know if it is safe? Just walk Morningside Drive during the day and see how many broken glass cars you can count from behind the Cathedral to 123rd Elem School. I have gotten broken into twice myself. No lie.
That park remains the typical dual-identity place, like so many other places in Harlem.
Does anyone know how safe Manhattan Avenue and the area around Morningside Park are nowadays?
Fine but some ghetto culture. There is a struggle going on.
