There is a great book called "free and cheap in NYC" Get it- it has everything free and cheap in NYC! But here are my faves- 1st night at the Brooklyn Museum, Free Fridays at MOMA, Having a drink on the MET rooftop, rowboating in central park, Free kayaking on the Hudson, Shakespeare in the park, NY CLassical Theater, Dim Sum...there is so many other free things i just don't have time to take advantage of but wish i could.

I'd rather shell out the extra couple of bucks to sit in the nose-bleed section than to sit in the bleachers. I always end up with a bad back after a game in the bleachers.

I also second going to the Met. Admission is not mandatory at all. I usually just give them a dollar. Sometimes the cashier will make a face at you for not paying full price (I think its currently $20) but usually its not a big deal. The Met is basically one of the best cultural assets in the world. I think everybody should take advantage of it once in a while.

Also walking around in random ethnic neighborhoods like Chinatown or Flushing can be interesting at times. Usually if you go during lunch you can find something very reasonable to eat.
