The further you go out into the boroughs the less strict the requirements typically become. If you are willing to commute in from the outer reaches of BK, Queens, Bronx you should be able to find a little more flexibility. But why just rush into a lease in a city you are not familiar with? Wouldn't it be better to rent a room and find jobs, not to mention ensure they are stable and pay decently? You could do that for several months, it wouldn't kill you.
