This looks to be exactly the kind of living arrangement ohmymark is looking for.

Moving to Chinatown... challenging or just impossible?

".... am fascinated with Chinatown. Since my S/O is only partially Chinese and naturally has no language ability, what are the odds for a non-Asian to find a place? All those cheap apartments must be grandfathered into Chinese families, but there's got to be some available apts! There seems to be no info on this anywhere. Thoughts? "

It looks like a prison. They were crowded in there like livestock. Regardless of one's views on immigration I think all but the most hardened of us would agree: Humans are not meant to live like that. Yet it is sad because they are being removed from the only shelter they have. Ugh.

Isaac Asimov would have loved it, he was a claustrophile.

Early last year I looked at an apt (if you could call it that) in Greenpoint which was a converted warehouse into unfurnished rooms. It looked almost identical to that layout, except the rooms were maybe triple the size of that one. Rent was going to be about $750 or $800.

I passed on it. I would be willing to bet they are charging double for those rooms now.

I agree they have to be unhealthy conditions. You're cooking in a not well ventilated space. God forbid if there was a fire in that place. While they do deserve to be in better conditions, there should be at least more affordable housing for the working poor in place for these people to go to.

Apartments (Or rooms used as living spaces) in this city get smaller while rent goes up. i posted about this a while ago that people are not supposed to live in spaces the size of a hamster cage. It's not healthy at all. We came out of the caves to wide open spaces and are De-evolving back into modern versions of those caves because of overcrowding and peoples greed over making a buck. There have been many fires in illegal conversions that have caused fatalities. Very sad. Where do these people even use bathroom facilities?

Between a place like the ones in the video and the outdoors, I will take the outdoors. better to roam free then be in a rented prison.

Um, you must not read a lot of the posts in the NYC forum to come to THAT conclusion.

For "some" on here, if you're not a college, educated professional, then you do NOT need to be living in ANY of the five boroughs.

And I dare one of them to deny it.

I would also apply "if you could call it that" here.
This listing astonished me, one of my friends pointed it out.
