I am considering the nypd as a career and am testing soon. I was just wondering what nyc neighborhoods or suburbs are popular with cops in terms of living and having a family. I am from Chicago and have also visited nyc before (my old neighborhood looks much like Corona in Queens), so urban living is nothing new to me. But I know that here in Chicago where cops must live within the city boundaries, there are certain neighborhoods inhabited mainly by cops and firemen. Is it the same in nyc? If anyone can offer any advice I would appreciate it.

Members of the NYPD have to live in the 5 boros or the surrounding counties of NYS. Nassau & Suffolk on Long Long Island and to the north of the city it is Westchester, Rockland & Putnam Counties. I think the last survey showed that slightly over the majority live outside of NYC.

The areas in NYC that the cops & firemen seem to migrate to are in Brooklyn: Marine Park, Bay Ridge, Gerristen Beach and Mill Basin-Bergin Beach. Queens has many areas where cops & firemen live but Rockaway/Breezy Point stands out the most. Bayside & Whitestone, too. The Bronx would be Throgs Neck. Pick just about any neighborhood in Staten Island! And forget Manhattan....

Yeah just about any neighborhoods in the outerboroughs where Irish and Italians predominate you'll find a lot of Firemen and Cops. I know this is the case in my neighborhood in the Bronx.

The suburbs are another option, but it is often more expensive to live in NJ, Westchester, or Nassau than it is to live in the outer-boroughs.

Gated community? No one said anything about that. It's a simple question and in most cities it is definitely common to see neighborhoods with heavy cop and firemen populations. I don't see the humor in that.

I grew up in NYC and my childhood best friend's dad was a fireman. The lived in the Bronx and there were a ton of cops and firement there. I remember that they all looked after each other closely and had a key to each others house to take care of things when they went on vacation. This was years ago but Im sure its still this way today.

mead seems to be right on as I recall... but I have been gone from NY for a while now
