Hi, I'm a male from England, I've just graduated high school and am taking a year away from school before going to University. I've managed to secure an internship in manhattan for september to december 2013 and I am looking for accommodation within daily commutable reach of manhattan.
Can anyone tell me where I might find short term lets, room sharing or any other ideas. I'm trying to keep as low budget as possible and am happy with any quality of accommodation.
Many thanks all who take the time to read/answer this.
Well in terms of low I'm looking at under $1000 a month, preferably nearer to $800 (including utilities) But in terms of where I want to live I'm not too bothered, just want to avoid being in Harlem or anywhere north of there if possible.
The best I've come up with so far is sharing a room with someone who's advertising for a room mate on craigslist etc however its hard to organise those so far in advance and really most need want me to be there so I can meet them etc
I know its going to be difficult but I still think that its possible.
your best bet is going to be coming here and maybe staying at a hostel for a few days while you look for an apartment. It is doubtful, and probably a bad idea to even try, lining something up before you get here.

That will be difficult. There will be very few option in Manhattan south of 96th Street for that price even with roommates. You might reconsider looking in Upper Manhattan, the Bronx or Queens if your job is located in Midtown, Brooklyn if your job is in Lower Manhattan.
Hard to do. As someone said, stay in a hostel for a few days and look locally.
There are cheap places, but they might not be legal. And it may help ro know some spanish but not required:-) :-)
Sites like nycrooms.com where you can rent a small room for $150 or so a month.
Depending on which immigrant you rent from though, they will try to nickel and dime you once you get settled in. Not everything is necessarily included, and I just found out today that although I pay rent here, I'm not allowed to touch the couch haha. Weird peœple indeed:-)
I'll be moving soon lol
thank you very much for the replies, so far ive seen the best info about rooms on easyroommate.com where there seem to be an abundant amount of rooms - can i trust sites like this? my problem is that obviously i cant go for a viewing - would you advise staying in a hostel as you suggested and then viewing the apartment once im there or can i risk turning up to rent it - Ive never rented before so i don't know the protocols, especially in the US
waldo there are rooms you can rent for $125.00 a week in the upper manhattan, Washington heights..
