I live on the east end but my job search is going nowhere. I would like to start applying for NYC jobs but I need a quick commute because I am responsible for my kids (if they get sick, etc..). Can anyone recommend an area? I have a budget of between 700-800K. Looking for Nassau County and not Queens, if possible.

Garden City, Rockville Centre, Floral Park (Nassau Side).

Great Neck is a good choice. Has LIRR, literally one exit on 495 to Little Neck and Douglaston which is Queens. Despite its closeness to Queens, Great Neck is burbs and has better school district to match it.

make sure the OP is aware of the real estate tax which would affect his budget. Also 700-800 maybe tight for GN

I agree. I think it largely depends on what OP is looking for. He or she never said how many bedroom, bath, etc. is needed. As for taxes, considering OP is looking specifically in Nassau, I'd be surprised if OP isn't aware of prop taxes.
