nyack is right across the bridge from tarrytown; their talking about into nyc.
I don't understand. Do you mean that they are talking about a place that's closer the NYC? (I might sound slow...I'm just living in Minnesota ) so I kind of don't have an idea about the area at all.....

It doesn't take 1.5 hours to get into Manhattan from Rockland, I know because I live here and I commute. Traffic is bad but if you know how to play it right you can be in the city in under an hour. Plus the buses and trains are a lot quicker than driving into the city.
Rockland and Westchester are divided by the Hudson River. The Tappan Zee bridge connects the two counties. Nyack is on one side of the bridge, right at the base - first exit and Tarrytown is on the other side of the bridge, right at the base - first exit. The commute there is the bridge span. There is a bus called Tappan Zee Express that runs from Rockland to the train. Tarrytown has the MetroNorth train which takes you directly into Manhattan (Grand Central) where as the trains in Rockland take you to Hoboken (in NJ) and you make a train change at Hoboken to NYC (takes like 5 mins).
And no, Rockland is not the boonies/sticks. It's completely (overly) developed. I'm sure the poster is just used to the city life being from the Bronx but it certainly isn't farm land. It's suburbia.

I'm a city kid, that's why I call it "the boonies". Remember, I'm used to walking to the store as opposed to driving to it! And I know that Rockland's developed.
As far as commute, I was talking about the bus, with all the stops, taking an hour-plus!
Oh, yeah, isn't it true that NJ Transit that goes to Spring Valley it closed on weekends?

Newtoli covered the day laborer issue pretty well; though that's been contained to the village of Brewster itself, which is very geographically small. The town of Southeast, which is larger, has many nice neighborhoods. For whatever reason, hardly anyone who lives in Southeast says they live in Southeast- we all say Brewster.
However, the taxes are going up considerably, and it's a pain to get to the stores. I got spoiled living in Queens and Nassau- everything here is so spread out and while it's pretty and rural, it's also aggravating. It's a lot less convenient.
