Hi, everyone. I am moving to New York on June 6th, 2013. I have an apartment with a roommate lined up in Greenwood Heights, but she wants to explore other areas. She is looking at an apartment about $200 cheaper in Prospect Lefferts Gardens off of Church Avenue. We will be 2 blocks from a subway stop. Is this area safe for 2 single Caucasian women in their 20s? The only reason I ask is because I see many mixed reviews all over the Internet about crime and violence. Any help/ advice would be great!
I had better knowledge of that neighborhood in 2006 than I do now, but I will say that I always thought of the north part of the area (lefferts ave, Maple St.) as being more desirable than the southern parts. Also I don't even think that Church Ave is in PLG. Church Ave did not seem at all desirable at that time but maybe it has improved a little.
If I had to choose, I would go with Greenwood Heights. If there are two of you, it's only $100 more per month each, right?
I live with a roommate in PLG and it's safe. I'm not sure that where you are is PLG, but that's only a couple blocks from me. The neighborhood is safe. We are two white women in our early 20s and have had no problem with the area. It's a residential neighborhood, so don't expect a ton of nightlife. Also, the only really great food you will probably find is Jamaican, but there are a lot of great fruit stands. My block is relatively quiet and we are surrounded by pre-war buildings and brownstones. The architechture is definitely a great bonus of the neighborhood.
Is Maple Street safe for caucasion in 20's living with roommates?
