Obviously if you have one, i have one nothing thick but its definitely there and more prevalent when I'm angry. I also grew up in the suburbs but everybody's parents are from nyc so I guess it was passed on... I self loath about it sometimes, does anybody else like or dislike it ? I know it's viewed as a novelty elsewhere in America.
i used to have one and it does occasionally still come out, especially if i am angry or excited
i don't like it and try to suppress it if i notice it, aside from occasional joking around with it. luckily for me living far away for a few years mostly got rid of it
as has been pointed out, it's more alive in the outer boroughs than manhattan. since i grew up in brooklyn, that's how i got it
If I had a New York accent I'd wear it like a badge of honor. But being from Northern Virginia I have the typical bland mid-atlantic/midwestern type of non-accent.
That's what I say, man. I consider it part of culture, nothing to be ashamed of. New Yawwwk baby!
I have one, but it only comes out when I'm pissed off, drunk, or with a bunch of NYer friends expressing the "dialect" if you will. While I keep the accent under wraps and don't bust it out, I do love my accent. The ability to speak without an accent is very helpful in case I'm in mixed company or on business. I've actually had NYers ask me "Where are you from?" because I have no detectable accent unless I want to make it known.
I do pretty much the same with my Boston accent, which can be pretty thick.I learned to lose it when I came to NYC to go to college because so many people gave me such a hahd time but if I go and spend a weekend with friends or family in Boston it comes back pretty fast.....sort of uncontrollably, especially when alcohol is added to the mix.
I'd rather listen to any regional east coast accent than that gawd awful nasal midwest twang which is supposedly non accent.

I love accents, they're so much fun to listen to. Boston is one of my faves.. Wha did you paak the caaah so faaah away from da baaaaah?

But it's true, I always hated the nasally mid-western speech growing up. I know I have the mid-western nasally sound too and it's worse during allergy season.
Now if you heard me you'll probably think I was from the south since I do have bit of a twang too, then add in there a little NY (I surprise myself sometimes pronouncing certain words).
yes, yes, yes, I love my Brooklyn accent. I never want to lose it.
To me it is and will always be "earl", and "terlet", no matter what......I don't care.
A friend of mine named Earl swears this is a true story.
When he was living in the Bronx, he was having car trouble and had a neighbor who was pretty good with cars take a look. After the neighbor popped the hood and took a look inside the engine compartment for a while, he turned to my friend and said in real Noo Yawkese:
some people say o-ull for oil, but
I say o-yul for oil; never "url".
lol wth is url?
It's how mostly old timers speak, ever see Archie Bunkers accent? The old timers I knew growing up spoke exactly like that. That heaviness is dying out, not many WWII vets remaining, the last cohort who speaks like that is the crew born in the 1930s/early 40s, my father was born in March '34 and has a similar accent to Bunker, except he is a 5'9" skinny Polish american guy.
