And I don't believe there are any studio apartments in Pelham Bay for 400-500 or any 1 br apartments in Parkchester for 800.If there were studio apartments in Pelham Bay for "400-500" the population of Pelham Bay would be 1 million.
I'm paying $1000 for a studio in Wakefield, if that gets you an idea of the market. The OP is right, you can a decent sized one bedroom apartment for $1200 in the Bronx.

Those prices ($500) if they even exist, are probably in decayed buildings full of rats with no heat and hot water (you know, buildings that are going to be condemned by the city any day). The OP can spend $1200 a month and wants a nice apartment in the Bronx, not a YMCA or program house/welfare motel.

lol, I thought that providing specific details would not allow this thread to derail into a what-neighborhood-is-better debate. How wrong I was!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions, i'm going to check out some neighborhoods this weekend to see which one I like the best.

There are a lot of cool places in the Bronx. You'll find something you like.
