I am currently looking for work and applying for jobs in NYC. Some of the listings require a minimum salary requirement. I want to meet my basic living expenses but do not want to put a salary requirement so high that it would put me out of contention for the position. I am wondering what is the minimum salary to live in NYC.

Here are my requirements: a studio apartment (does not have to be in great neighborhood, am fine with living in a marginal neighborhood), electrical (only plan on using laptop, lights, refrigerator, cell phone charger, and perhaps ac), monthly metrocard for transportation, heating (am willing to live with heat at 55-60 during the winters), internet, and groceries.

It depends. If you are okay with not having a kitchen you could probably get something for like 700-800. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, it is doable. Especially if you don't care about trendy 'hoods. You will need to make 40x, so that means about 28-32K pre-tax. My old roommate lives this way in Rego Park in Queens. She has a small fridge/freezer, convection oven, hot plate and microwave she had delivered from Best Buy for less than what two weeks' rent is in most places. She keeps it all neatly tucked away behind a custom wall unit we made a weekend project out of, so it is all neatly hidden away. She also has a twin bed that doubles as an ottoman. All 280 square feet of her place is like a case study in intelligent use of space. Not glamorous but the financial peace of mind and privacy make up for it and she seems much happier now being in her own place. Sometimes I get jealous of her rent being so cheap and when my lease is over I may follow suit. It sounds terrible having no real kitchen but if you saw her place it is lovely, very comfortable. We both have formal design training though. If you don't and intend on living in such a tiny space I cannot suggest a good interior designer highly enough. It costs a bit but is money well spent. For several hundred dollars and a few hours of time they can give you the resources, advice and insight to make your space better geared for your life. You needn't suffer, there is no reason to if you plan well.

Don't listen to this. And by all means, stay out of Manhattan.

l lived in a decent sized studio in Elmhurst Queens for $950 a month with water and gas included. Very nice building and management. Figure $80 for electric and $50 for internet. You should survive with 40k but feel comfortable with 60k.

I appreciate everyone's responses and advise. I will definitely look at the Elmhurst and Rego Park neighborhoods should I move to NYC. I will probably prefer at least a small kitchen with a sink and stove, though a dishwasher is non essential.

In Rego Park you can find large studio apts. with small kitchens that include a sink, a fridge and a stove (but no dishwasher)for approx. $1000 a month. The rent includes heat as well as hot and cold water.

Are you just looking at Queens? There are plenty of places in Brooklyn you can also rent a studio for 1K or less per month.
