I notice that some of the streets in Wakefield look like some streets in Soundview and Castle Hill(ie. that "eastern bronx look" with the attached row of houses and occasional tenement or two)
My question is, if i worked in Soundview or Castle hill a block off the el(eg Westchester Ave) and shopping street, would i feel any less safe there than i do in Wakefield, or would it about the same? Would I feel as safe on that walk to Dunkin Donuts as i do in Wakefield?
My guess is that Hustla might say that Castle hill is about the same but that Soundview is much worse than Wakefield, especially around Elder Ave, etc
In fact I'm guessing that Hustla might say that there is no comparison between Wakefield and Soundview, with Wakefield being far better and civilized
What do you think?

The ghetto is the ghetto end of story. There is no worse then another when it comes to these high crime areas. White Plains Road is pretty intense, the area has a very high murder rate (over 50 per 100,000) and more importantly robberies and random assualts are very common. So it's bad, what can be worse? If you can handle working on White Plains Road in Wakefield, you can handle working in on any ghetto retail strip period.
Like I always say victimization is never guerenteed. The thing is if you frequent these high crime areas (and especially if you live there) the chances are very good.
Soundview is also a rough area but it's not like you are hanging out, you are working behind plexiglass or locked doors you buzz people in I assume. Robberies are common in the area, but so are they on White Plains Road/Wakefield/Ollinville/Williamsbridge area. Just use caution that's all.
Castle Hill is ghetto too, but the primary retail strip is in a more layed back section north of the Cross Bronx Expressway. Just use caution as above.
These are not nice areas to live or hang out but as long as you use caution on the way to and from work it is unlikely you will have a problem. I would use caution when you lock up at night though. I wouldn't talk on a cell phone while walking down the street either. If someone calls just tell them you will call back.

IT DEPENDS ON THE SPECIFIC BLOCKS. You cannot generalize, EVER.

No these areas are pretty damn ghetto all over. There might be a few quiet blocks scattered around but they are usually right next to a hell hole. So in the end even if the block itself is usually pretty quiet when you come outside you still have to worry a lot about getting robbed or having your car broken into.
