Cheaper rent, not as crowded, a Chinese community already in place so people just moving into the area will not feel like outsiders. I see alot of these mom and pop Chinese stores and restaurants catering to the chinese community to move to the outer boroughs as Manhattan lease prices sky rocket. Again cheaper commercial rent and a growing population / ustomer base.
I think a lot more Asians will move into the Bronx. I think the early signs of it happening are starting to pop up.

I would love that if only for the better dining options, but I honestly don't see it.

The only real Asian neighborhood in the Bronx (204th off of the Concourse) seems to be hanging in there, but I wouldn't say its thriving. And that place is only like 2-3 blocks tops.

Asian parents are very concerned about their children's education and the Bronx has some of the roughest schools in the city. I think that is one of the main things keeping Asians away from the Bronx.

That depends on your definition of Asian. There are plenty of Bengalis and Pakis spread throughout the Bronx, and Parkchester has a very large concentration.

It also depends on your definition of Chinese - there is a large population of chinese heritage in Queens and spread throughout midtown Manhattan. Currently chinatown is populated by the more recent immigrants from China and as an earlier person alluded to it is all a matter of the fact that people are still emigrating from China/Southeast Asia and moving into Chinatown. For whatever reasons there is less compulsion to emigrate from Italy and as people with Italian ancestary move out there are not as many immigrants to replace them.

In the 1970's Little Italy was much bigger, many of the origianal Italian's who lived there have sadly moved to the suburbs on Long Island, Jersey, and the outer borough's.

Hey Moth:

I remember Mulberry Street.. A good friend of mine grew up on Mulberry and lived there until he married in the late 80's. Last I heard his parents still were there, though the neighborhood changed a lot. Such a shame, but things change and memories are all we have sometimes. Some great resturants are still there thankfully!
