I'm over in New York for 12 months with two of my friends and am finding it extremely difficult to find an apartment that will allow us to take on a lease because we do not have a credit rating in America or an American co-signer. Does anyone know of any decent landlords or Irish people who experienced this problem themselves in the past? our budget is about 3000 bit more if its very nice and we have been looking at wiliamsburg, astoria. Basically safe areas that are close to the city! been all over craigslist already! any help on the matter would be appreciated!
Your best bet is to go to an Irish neighborhood like Woodlawn where there are lots of Irish immigrants. There are other Irish neighborhoods in New York but they are Irish-American. Woodlawn however is still heavily White and Irish with a wonderful influx of Irish people coming directly from Ireland regularly. Best of luck and welcome to America!
Sunnyside, Queens has a lot of Irish and it's a very nice neighborhood that's very close to Manhattan. I happened to go into The Brogue on Skillman Ave when I was moving to NYC, since it was right next to my broker's office in Sunnyside. The bartenders and patrons were really friendly and gave me some good advice on finding an apartment. It seemed like at least half of the people there had Irish accents.
I'm sure other people who have lived here longer might be able to offer better advice. I'm American, though, so I didn't have to deal with this particular issue, so this is all I can offer.
Sunnyside Gardens is full of fresh off the boat Irish. You should walk into a pub on Skillman and strike up some convos, you'll probably have a basement rental that night

Excellent posts. Sunnyside, NY is a vibrant community as well.
I seem to recall a lot of Irish influence in Inwood. Stick to the West of Broadway.
I know an older Irish man who used to live in Inwood and now lives in Spuyten Duyvil. The Irish started leaving Inwood sometime ago and moving to more suburban places in Westchester or in Riverdale. There are still some but certainly not as much as there used to be.
You could try Maspeth, Middle Village, and Glendale in Queens. They are all near Williamsburg and have decent sized Irish populations.
Of the three, I think Maspeth would have the largest. At least it did in the past. Woodhaven, Queens also had a decent sized Irish population, but that is changing very fast.
