Harlem on the rise!
There ARE new buildings and Brownstones in Harlem.
But it's still Harlem and comes with advantages (it's liveliness, spirit and culture)
and disadvantages.
The rats still live there.

My friend lived at 145th and St. Nick and I used to go uptown for 2 year until he moved and I never saw a rat.

Well, not sure if Morningside is part of Harlem, but it's a nice area. Even near the "projects" is nice...heck, there's a Citarella across from the projects now! Anyway, I don't know about East Harlem, only West and I think it's ok.

That's what I heard
That's what I heard. I moved away from NYC some time ago, so I've forgotten some stuff. I still live in New York though.

I much prefer a more integrated, diverse Harlem than the 100% anything...because the projects are there Blacks will always have a presence..so I am glad to see different people, incomes, classes, national and international people moving into the area.

I'm sorry Guy, I don't mean to nitpick...But, what does that mean? There are people of all races living in the projects across NYC, and even in Harlem. And for the record, not all black people living in Harlem, are living in section 8 housing or in the projects as most people seem to believe. Many blacks living in Harlem, own homes and apartments, or are residents of privately owned buildings and have been residents for 20-50+ years.

Not a problem Vitalove. The housing projects will be there for the foreseeable future, so the fear of blacks/people of color being pushed out of Harlem is unfounded. I agree that there are also PLENTY of homeowners of color in Harlem, but homeownerhip can quickly change hands and new people enter, whereas those in the projects are less likely to leave due to a lack of resources/skills/affordability.
However, if you are trying to convince me that people of color are not the overhwhelming majority of people in housing projects I need to see some backup on that assertion. My point was only that due to the housing projects, not home ownership, Blacks (and other people of color) will always have a seat at the table.

While the residents of Harlem are mostly Black and Latino there have always been other races there as well. As for classes, national and international, there has always been that too.

What is meant by this statement? I have passed by Grant project on W 125th and I have seen White and Asian residents as well as Black and Latino. There are enough white and Asian residents around that they don't stand out. Most of the Brownstones in Harlem are still owned by black people, also some latino's. Most co-ops are also owned by black and latino residents. Some white people and Asians own brownstones and coops. The new Luxury apts are mostly being sold to White and Asian people. These however were built on land that was already vacant. Some are rehabs of buildings that were abandoned for years.
But definitely all black people in Harlem are not poor. It has always been this way.
