Nicest section of Harlem
Wondering if anyone has any knowledge about what the best section of Harlem is. I have heard; West Harlem, South Harlem and the area around Marcus Garvey park. Any thoughts would be appreciated?

Urbanquest..pay no mind to the mindless masses...their comments are pointless. I am unfamiliar with the best area of Harlem...you might want to google it. I know there are some impressive brownstones that rival any you will see in the upper east side..or anywhere else in the city for that matter. If you live in the city...take a walk around...there is alot of good stuff happening in Harlem!

The nicest area of Harlem is "Strivers Row."
After that, probably the immediate area around City College. On Convent Avenue.

Mourningside Heights, though I'm not really sure if people consider that Harlem so much, but that would have to be the best area

South of 125th street to 110th street and west of 5th Avenue is the best part of Harlem right now. The other areas of Harlem are ok. I was just walking in the area earlier today actually. I also did a walk in East Harlem.

O.K., other than the poster who probably doesn't know there is a significant amount of gentrification going on in Harlem, I would say it sounds like SW Harlem (not including Morningside Heights) is the nicest.

Harlem is the hood. That is the honest truth. You might have a nice new "luxury" building plotted down or a renovated brownstone occupied by yuppies but as soon as you walk out that door you are in the ghetto. Harlem as a whole has a pretty low quality of life. Crime is a problem (the crime rate is high), noise, maintaince in the majority of the buildings in the area (severe violations in many).
The area with the most gentrification is probably around Columbia University. However honestly even around there is is rough. You have the projects up the block. A lot of run down tenement buildings. Biggest problem is the trouble making kids, robberies, aggressive homeless, and the drug activity. Realities you will have to deal with in that area. The quality of life is low as well.
Don't forget many of these people are not happy that gentrification is displacing their neighbors. So there is tension.
