I am taking a job in Manhattan at at the end of November and I'm completely clueless as to where I should live. I have looked everywhere for a place. I'm not looking for a realtor, I'm looking to get an idea as to the safest places in the area for a female that wants to live alone. I know certain areas in Harlem are changing along with BK but, I don't want to pick the wrong location. These places stuck out to me because they are still priced moderately.

I will be making just under 100k. However I'm trying to stay under $1800 in rent.

My friends suggested jersey city as it should be my cheapest option. Any thoughts? I have never lived in the area, only visits so I need help!

Where is your job more specifically? Can you give us the neighborhood? That makes a difference in commuting. For instance, I work in the Upper East Side, so it's convenient for me to live in Queens. If I worked downtown, it might be more convenient to live in Brooklyn.

Jersey City no question then. 1800 is enough for a 1 bedroom downtown. Your commute should be under 15 minutes.

Jersey City could be a good option and the transportation on the PATH train should be easy. I've only been there a few times, though, so I can't really recommend.

In Brooklyn, you could try looking into Bay Ridge. I am quite sure you could find a good one bedroom for under $1800. I am not sure how long the commute would be (maybe 40 min?) but you can get good value there and there are some nice amenities -- some cute restaurants and gyms, the waterfront, etc. I think trying to stay under $1800 would make a search difficult in some of the nicer areas of Brooklyn (Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, Fort Greene, Boerum Hill, etc.) but check to make sure. It's hard keeping up with what the latest rents have skyrocketed to lately.

For commute times you can use either the MTA trip planner, or Google maps -- just click on the train icon when you do the directions, instead of the car icon.

Im curious why dont you want to use a real estate agent?

You would be surprised how fast you can get to places via subway so dont rule out certain areas and a nonsense 15min rule lol. For example i live in the myrtle wycoff stop and my office is on 23/5 from my door to office it takes 22-25mins. Good luck with your search, as an agent i can tell you theres a 1BR on 2ave in the 20s for $1900

Maybe she didn't want to have the feeling she's being solicited by agents on this thread. But I forgot to mention in my post that actually I didn't understand her statement about not wanting to use an agent either. She will most likely have to pay a broker fee anyway, so why not let someone help her throughout the process starting now?
