New York City is not very safe for naive tourists, unless you stay at the Marriott in Times Square and don't leave Times Square except to get to and from the airport.
Pretty much anywhere in Manhattan and western Queens is fine. Those are usually the most convenient places to stay if you are planning to spend most of your time in Manhattan.
Look for something in Midtown Manhattan or Long Island City, Queens if you want something really convenient and safe. Long Island City seems to have better prices than hotels in Manhattan, and most hotels are just one or two subway stops away from Manhattan.
Serious Answer: Any neighborhood that is tourist heavy is going to be a safe area to stay for a week. Thast means almost all of Manhattan below 125th st on the west side and 96th st on the east side, and most of the trendy Brooklyn neighborhoods like Willamsburg, Ft. Greene, Propsect Hiehgts, Park Slope. Staying in the outer boroughs is another thing altogether, as there are too many nabes to list the safety of each and every one. If you need help on these boards about staying outisde of Manhattan, you'd have to give us the neighborhood or address or intersections for anyone to help you. But just leave it at this -- if you are visiting a tourist attraction outside Manhattan -- Coney Island, Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo, the Brooklyn Museum -- you wont have to worry about safety too much, as they are all well-traveled spots with good security.
And hardly anyone looks at these issues (safety) by zip code. Almost always done by neighborhood.
Yeah there are so many zip codes in NYC that no one pays too much attention to them. It's by the name of the neighborhoods, or by major landmarks/streets. Right now, we are booked in the Mount Eden Parkway, Bronx, NY area. I heard this zip code was bad, but it honestly looked fine judging by the google maps. Apparently people are saying it's a dangerous slum, so we were looking for alternatives.
Do you have a budget here? I'm assuming you're looking to get a hotel in Manhattan but are priced out, and are thus trying to get something close to Manhattan. People can help greatly if more information is provided.
