Can husband, wife and 1-year-old make it in Manhattan on $175k/year?
I'm an optometrist and my wife's a teacher. We sometimes have a pipe dream about moving to Manhattan. I realize buying a home is nearly impossible so we would have to rent. I would appreciate any feedback from those in the know. Thanks!

Yes, unless you plan to have a car, live in a townhouse and go out for dinner every night.

I think you can definitely afford the apartment and lifestle on that salary. Paying for your kid's schooling is going to be one of your main expenses. Most public schools in the city aren't that great, and the private ones tend to be expensive.
Expect to pay anywhere from $3,000-5,000 per year for parochial school, on the low end, all the way up to $20,000 per year for one of the better private schools. (That $20k per year applies to elementary/middle school, and not just high school).

Yes, you could have a decent apartment in a good area and still be able to do things like go out to dinner, etc.

Are you serious? survive2012.com is almost as bad as the nut job Harold Camping who predicts the world will end in 2011.
