I understand that there are homeless and needy people. I do. But pandling in the subway should not be a way to get help. Even though it is against the law, it is largely tolerated in NYC and encouraged by the many passengers who do give money. Which perpetuates this behavior. We are all pretty busy and/or stressed. I really don't want to be subjected to someone's loud begging or singing or music playing or whatever. Especially the begging gets to me. I don't want to hear someone shouting about their poor life and asking loudly for help almost every time i am just trying to get from point a to point b in a (usually) crowded and (sometimes) hot subway. This should be punished and discouraged. This is the law. What are your thoughts?
If you don't like it, you can just ignore them for the one or two minutes that they're in the same car as you. I don't see what the big deal is.
How would you punish and discourage this behavior anyway? Give them a fine that they don't have the means of paying for? Or throw them in jail and have the taxpayers pay for their stay? If they're panhandling, chances are they don't have much to lose already.
And have some sympathy. Yes, you're busy and stressed, but you think these guys want to beg? You think they're not stressed wondering where they're going to spend the night and where to get their next meal?
I have more of an issue with those who sleep in the subway car, taking up an entire bench.

I agree with most of the above. But what I dislike are the ones that play very loud music in order to attract other passengers' attention. This should definitely stopped as being confined in a small space with nowhere really to go it is deafening to my ears.

I think we should put them in jail if they can't pay. It's illegal, and people who break the law should be punished.

Let me rephrase your complaint.
"I think subway pan-handling should be punished because I'd like to live in a bubble."
I'm far more annoyed at those kids who crank up their music and start doing gymnastics/dancing on the train. Unless the panhandler is aggressive I generally don't mind them too much. Social services have been cut to the bone.

Ugh, I forgot about the preachers--the most annoying of all by far. If I wanted to hear their fire and brimstone garbage I'd go to a crappy storefront church.
