Default possible areas to live in NYC

I am moving to NYC soon. Since I need to sell my condo at current location and the market is slow, I may need to pay double rent for some time. I am looking for a safe area to live (a little walk to transportation is ok), either in Manhattan, Queens or Brooklyn (my work place is in financial district). I don't mind a roommate or living alone with a budget of $1,400.
Can anyone suggest some areas?
Thanks in advance.

Default Me too...

Me too. I have a $1300 mortgage to cover in FL. Working in Financial District and would like a 15 minute commute and a apartment for less than $1200/month. Is this possible? If so, where should I look for a modest apartment in a safe area?

check this thread http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...oving-nyc.html

and I would say no, an apartment for less than $1200 a month with a 15 minute commute is not possible. Unless you hit the real estate jackpot.

There are actually some good deals in the financial district these days - although I don't know about $1400. But people always can get lucky. You could start by checking the roommates/chares listings in Craig's List.
