All I know is the Hilton in Times Square and the New Yorker. Since I live here, I really can't say anything about hotels. Restaurants... We go to Carmine's a lot, Umberto's Clam House (restaurant where the Mobster Joey Gallo was shot and killed), and the Empire Diner. We've never been to a single restaurant in NYC more than two times... Diversity is great. Things to see are Yankee Stadium, of course. Also, the Guggenheim, Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center (do it at dusk or night!), Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Museum of the City of New York, Greenwich Village shops, Lower East Side tenaments, Chelsea Piers, South Street Seaport, the Intrepid aircraft carrier on the West Side, Grand Central Terminal, etc.
Dylan's Candy Bar. 1011 3rd. Ave. Love that place, you gotta go there. 2 stories of nothing but candy. ![]() Zabar's. Broadway and 80th St. Since 1930, food from every part of the globe. The cheese department alone stocks 600 varieties. ![]() Carnegie Deli. 854 7th Ave. Founded in 1934. Famous for pastrami sandwiches. Last edited by FutureCop; 11-09-2007 at 11:12 AM. |

August is a great time to visit NYC on a budget, it is the low season for hotels. You should be able to score a great deal on Priceline or Hotwire. My family stayed at the Holiday Inn Express on 28th or 29th St in July and were pleased with the new rooms and free breakfast. The Hilton in Times Square and the Marriott Marquis are great if you have more money to spend. The Bowery Hotel is gorgeous if you want more of a real New York experience; it is new and luxurious but across the street from a Salvation Army service center. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the rooms at the New Yorker as well.
