Tomato Battle « Beer. Bands. Tomato Fight.Tomato Battle

Really? Who wants to partake in such a wasteful event? I don't understand people who do this.

Website lists it as "They are past ripe and can’t be sold. They are inedible and are not fit for human consumption." which is completely false. You can easily use "over ripe" tomatoes in soups and other forms of edible food.

This is of course all irrelevant if they are throwing moldy tomatoes at one another which would be hilarious.

I agree. Why can't they use it for compost or use the seeds to re-plant? If they are at the point of being rotten then I would agree that they are not fit for consumption but I would find some other sustainable alternative.

Get over it.
La Tomatina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Fire Trucks hose down the streets ... After the cleaning, the village cobblestone streets are pristine due to the acidity of the tomato disinfecting and thoroughly cleaning the surfaces."

"Food aid that we sent to Somalia was sometimes stolen, but mostly rotted on the docks – because the locals didn’t have trucks. When we sent trucks to distribute the food, the “army” stole the trucks and the food still rotted on the docks. When we sent the US Army into Somalia to distribute the food ourselves, the bandits and warlords shot at us."

The larger waste of food is in pumping it into a bunch of fatties, why not complain about that instead?

Except you know we don't have bandits stealing tomatoes and this event will be held in the aviator sports and events center no where near a residential area for these "cleaning" effects to be beneficial.

You can only remove so much freedom of choice when it comes to feed here in NYC. Also tomatoes are good for you. Terrible arguments.

Yeah, this bothered me, too, when I saw it. Of course, maybe they're "unfit" because they've been stockpiling them instead of eating them. And, of course, what may be "unfit" for the dainty palates of Manhattan gourmets could be very welcome indeed by other people.

wow, the country which wastes the most food and is #2 for environmental damages complaints about a rather small waste of food. i think everybody here should first start at their own home, then look at what others do.

I'd rather starve food nazis to death. It's a far more poetic outcome.
