I got a text message this AM with the following content:
-------------
Manhattan, NY AMBER alert UPDATE: LIC/GEX 1377 (1995) Tan Lexis ES300

expiration: jul 18,2013 2:51am
--------

Wtf is this? What's amber alert?
Why am I getting this crap? How did they get my number?

I can make no sense of the massage other than it sounds like a license plate number.

Anyone else received this?

I also got this text message at 3am this morning.

Amber Alert is a great system in effect.

Does your phone also alert you for "flash flood warning" or hurricane? Mine does.

I understand now but these are my questions:

-How somebody who isn't reading the news everyday is supposed to know that this regarding an abducted child? The text says nothing about it

-how did they get my number?

-In a city of 8 million people, are we gonna get a txt message every time a child gets abducted?
Not trying to minimize the fact that a child is with his mentality unstable mother now but I would think that txt msg warnings like this one should be sent out only in case of an emergency affecting a great number of people.

Btw the geniuses sending the txt msg misspelled LEXUS.

An Amber Alert is sent out when New York City Police Dept. feels a child's life is in danger. A lot of us got this around 3am today. It gets triggered 24 hours after the abduction of endangered child is confirmed by NYPD. You are getting this because your mobile provider agreed to Amber Alert notices. Think of it like flash flood warnings your get from NOAA or local weather reporters. NYPD hopes by sending the license plate number to you (as well as truck drivers, toll booth operators, etc.), people can help law enforcement find this particular little 7-month old boy whose mother abducted him from a supervised visit at child services agency in UWS. BTW, mother was diagnosed as bipolar and has recent history of violence. I am sure any help will be appreciated. As to how they got your number, ask Mr. Snowden....

If it helps to find an abducted child, I would be happy to receive the text message.

I got it as well, which is part of why my phone goes on silent when I go to sleep.

I see these Amber Alerts pretty frequently on the LCD display highways signs, and they're nothing new, but I've never gotten a text about one before. The incident was also on the morning news today. I don't know what's so special about it; it seems basically the same as all the others.
