At Allerton Avenue and up, it's "okay". There are projects on Allerton before you get to the hospital. Allerton past the Bronx River Parkway is the dividing line between "great" and "could get a bit sketchy".

Bronx Park East by Pelham Parkway and the next street over, Waring Avenue (a short distance away, south of Beth Abraham) is a great neighborhood. Safe. Well kept buildings. Mostly co-ops and condos, with a good rental supply. Apartments do go fast, however.

BPE Pro
1) Quiet neighborhood, with a lot of art deco buildings
2) Close to public transportation

BPE Con
1) Bronx River Parkway cuts right into a beautiful park!
2) Public transportation, but 2 line (as opposed to 5) could be a bit long going to the west side!

Bronx Park East from Lydig up to Allerton is a great area.North of Allerton can be a bit sketchy, especially right around Parkview Houses.

There is an entrance to the zoo at BPE and Lydig and an entrance to the Botanical Garden at BPE and Waring.Lots of shopping and other conveniences throughout the area, quite a low crime rate ,lots of parks and both East and West side subways.

And lets not forget white plains road. I usually say that if you want to meet a jamaican with access to the columbian cartel thats the place to be.
