Although it depends which area of brooklyn you live in, it is overall safer than harlem. Harlem may be cheaper in terms of housing. I would pick brooklyn over harlem but avoid the bad areas.
i have lived in brooklyn all of my life. 33 years. I have friends in harlem. they r both kool. but since im from bk im goin to talk it up. they r in the process of building the stadium on atlantic avenue. it will be the home of the new basketball team, it will be called the new york nets. (new jersey nets). So the real estate in brooklyn is starting to get higher. harlem is not to far from high real estate prices. both cities very diverse, with lots of great foods.
oh yea, brownsville, east new york are not the best. lol park slope is a mini village. ( the village in manhattan) carroll gardens, cobble hill, very expensive. im from prospect heights. right near the brooklyn public library and prospect park
There are neghborhoods in Brooklyn that are as bad or worse than Harlem (East New York, Crown Heights, and Brownsville). But in general most areas in Brooklyn are much better than Harlem. Even though Harlem in gentrifying it still has way too much high crime public housing areas.
Why does everyone write off Bushwick as being a bad area? I've lived there for about 5 years and never had a problem. Now, I'm in Bay Ridge and love it. Although Bushwick may not be heaven, it's slowly gentrify.
Brooklyn is a big place, my man. 2.5 million people. Nearly the size of Chicago. One million more people than Manhattan, for perspective. Harlem is a rather large, but still specific, neighborhood of Manhattan. Apples and oranges. It's worse and it's better, depends where you are. Brooklyn has both some of the worst hoods in NYC and some of the best, but most of it is the gray area in between.
With Harlem you also have different areas within it. IMO East Harlem is the worst part, because most of the public housing is concentrated over there.
IMO, Crown Heights, ENY, and Brownsville are on par with East Harlem, but the rest of Harlem is better than those neighborhoods.
