The mayor; after being advised by the department of health, urban planners, architects, and healthcare professionals decided to support new legislation and create a Center for Active Design.
Only a poor mayor would oppose such legislation and research.
This should have come many years ago. Many modern buildings created in more recent years are designed to promote healthy living. Via Verde in the Melrose Section of the Bronx is a solid example. Today's architects and urban planners realize the effect built environment plays on health.
Poor health has cost the city millions of dollars.
BTW, these changes are not forcing you to run miles, or lift hundreds of pounds. Stairwells become more accessible/primary, encouraging more bike lanes, plazas, public fitness centers, farmer's markets.
Should be a non-issue.

LOL. If he stays long enough, I feel that he will ban the use of A/C in summer days here.
I have thought that a responsible government should make minimal physical activity compulsory in view of the rising obesity/diabetes rate. But climbing stairs is out of my wildest imagination... it might just make the lazy butts stay in theirs couches all day long, lol.
It's pretty amazing howmgovernment has their hand in absolutely every area of life. If adults, and I want to emphasize ADULTS, want to stay out of shape and unhealthy then that is their choice. I personally workout and eat healthy, but some folks couldn't care less about health. But that's their choice. It is not the role of government to make folks to take stairs. Bloomberg go away you BOOB!
I will say that, at work, I see plenty of able-bodied adults take an elvator up 1 or two flights of stairs when it would have been faster to just take the stairs. I laugh...and move on. I don't think to force it upon them to start to take stairs.

Just like basic education. If it is left as a free choice, you will see >30% elementary dropouts.
