What do NYC residents think of this? Does NYC need some laws like that?

If it keeps undesirables out of the neighborhood then maybe we do. I'd "Stand My Ground" every day.

No. Studies show that SYG laws correlate with an increase in homicides--they do not make neighborhoods safer.

We can stand our ground but it has to be in our homes, businesses or areas under our direct control. AND NO THE LOBBY OF YOUR APARTMENT HOUSE DOES NOT COUNT.

We have a duty to retreat to that point.

NYC residents are sheeple. Taught by the government to run away or call the cops. The same cops that will show up an hour later when some hoodrat has carved you up.

Continue to live in your dream, and die in it too.

Violent crime here is low. The vast majority of people are in no danger of getting carved up. Paranoia.

Stand your ground justifies avoidable situations in a lot of cases. Not worth it. Why escalete what may likely diffuse on it's own? Being armed doesn't always mean you win either, in fact most very violent crimes like robberies are team efforts and random surprises.

Does Howdy Doody have wooden balls??
You're allowed to use reasonable force to protect yourself, regardless of a stand your ground law. The difference is that if a stand your ground law is in effect, you have no duty to attempt to first remove yourself from the situation.

Obviously if you're cornered in your apartment or whatnot, your ability to first remove yourself from the encounter is going to be limited, but if in a public place, I don't think it's unreasonable to say that you must first try and remove yourself from the situation before jumping to deadly force.

"Stand your ground" is a foolish law that encourages people to do foolish things.
