Ok, "nothing" is an exaggeration but seriously..

This area seems PERFECT for much more shopping/retail development since not only is it a well-populated area but the incomes there are pretty good by NYC standards; so this development can definitely be sustained. What is stopping this area from attracting shopping?

I was with my younger cousin last weekend in St. Albans and we were going to get him a video game. Our two closest options were the Green Acres Mall on Long Island or all the way north of the tracks on Jamaica Ave. This is very inconvenient especially when your in NEW YORK CITY. Don't get me wrong, i'm not some crazy shopaholic but a little convenience would be nice sometimes.

I love the idea that the small businesses are there but sometimes small businesses don't offer the best deals on certain things.

So what is stopping Southeast Queens from developing?

There used to be a whole lot in SE Queens in the 60s and 70s but Green Acres Mall, which is just across the Queens/Nassau borderline had more to offer. Movie theatres, stores, restaurants all closed down. SE Queens is "car land" so it's very easy to get around to Long Island for shopping and entertainment.

I'm not familiar too much with SE Queens but I'm sure there's a GameStop on Merrick or Linden Blvd somewhere.

Lots of areas around there [particularly the ones near Nassau] remind me of Long Island in the sense where commercial drags aren't very common and you have to drive to get anywhere [although bus service there is very good].

Edit: Never mind, just check Google and couldn't find anything. I guess it's due to Green Acres. At least the Q5 goes there.

Liberty Ave. is a vibrant Indian-Carib, Sikh, Bengali neighborhood. Lots of shops there that cater to various ethnicities. Howard Beach has a few restaurants. But you alluded to a primary cause - the presence of a large retail center within reasonable driving distance. It's hard for smaller shops to compete against giants with economies of scale. I think Resorts World offers entertainment and dining.

Green Acres being right over the border likely is the biggest reason.
