I'm currently 23 working at a tech company in Newark (and possibly getting a job in NYC instead). I'm looking to move somewhere in Manhattan that's not too expensive, has plenty of people my age and is not very far uptown. My price range is up to $2,000. I haven't decided yet what amenities I want or whether to share an apartment with others.. I'm just looking for suggestions for what neighborhoods might be best.

This is my first time posting on this forum so please let me know if I missed any details that would be important.

Thanks!

East Village or Lower East Side. But you can forget about amenities if you want to live anywhere downtown, by yourself, for $2000. Find a roommate--if they also have $2000 to spend you guys could get a pretty nice place.

Also what job do you have where you can afford a $2000 apartment at 23? I should have done that, lol.

I'm a Software Engineer : )

Based on a roughly 100k salary, from what I can find online, suggestions are to spend no more than 1/40th on monthly rent, or no more than 33% of take-home after-tax salary, both of which come out to about $2,000 - $2,500 / month.

Kips Bay--Murray Hill. I think you could find something in the $2,000 -- $2,500 range without having to have a roommate.

Lots of people your age live in this area, and I think rents are generally a little lower than trendy East Village or the now trendy parts of the Lower East Side--but still not cheap--but hey, nothing in Manhattan is cheap. There is a strip of bars on 3rd Ave from the high 20s to mid 30s (streets) that attract many of the recent-college-grad crowd. I also found it to be a safe neighborhood.

If you do see a relatively affordable apartment in a desirable neighborhood, good chance it will be on the 4th floor of a walk-up building. Keep that in mind.

Yes, Murray Hill is a popular area for young people, but it's a very different feel. In my experience Murray Hill is more of the regional state school fraternity crowd, whereas East Village / LES has more transplanted private college grads, maybe a little more diversity.

There's the apt you want, the apt you could get and the apt you actually can afford. You're only a train ride away from going places.
