I just got a job offer at NYP-Cornell Weill and I'm trying to figure out where I should be looking for places to live. I'm 27, single and could afford about $2200 a month. I'm not looking for anything too fancy, just safe and clean and pet friendly, close-ish to shops and restaurants and transportation, you know, the usual. A studio would be fine, of course a one bedroom would be awesome, but I'm not sure my budget will go that far. I'd like to be about a 30 minute commute away from work, but I really don't know where that leaves me, neighborhood-wise. Cornell Weill is sort of oddly located in terms of using the subway, so should I just stick with the UES? I don't love that idea as I've never really be enamored of the Upper East side in general. It's not awful or anything like that, but I've never really been super interested in it. Is there anywhere else that could afford something like a 30 minute commute? Is that unrealistic? I'm obviously not against walking as much as I need to, but I'd really rather not have to change trains four times or anything like that. I've been to New York more times than I can count, but I'm still not really that familiar with it, so I'm looking for help from people who really know the area.

I worked at sloan-kettering catty-corner to NY pres and lived on 68th street between 2nd and 3rd. It was great. Close to work, tons of places to eat, the subway was a little more than a block away and the crosstown bus was on 67th and 68th. Now I'm at 83rd and east end. It's a lot quieter and good for my family situation but I'm about as far as you can get from the subway on the UES (15-20 min walk) but I don't use it much anymore anyway.

If you really don't want to live on the UES maybe you could check out the west side and take one of the crosstown buses (68th or 72nd) over to NYP.

Upper East side isn't pertinent...lower East Side or Middle East side gives you the same M15 bus.
