Wanted to share this link. Some of us here do remember how the city was during this time. Its amazing the change that has taken place in the last 20 plus years. It will never, ever look like that ever again hopefully. My favorite pictures include the abandoned car on the West Side Highway and the street scenes on West Broadway and SoHo.

Wow, the city was so dirty and beat up. Doesn't look like there was a place in America that could beat it in nastiness.

That little kid with the balisong or butterfly knife is one tough looking kid. What do you think he is: jewish, irish, italian or polish or a mutt?

Why no photos of chinatown or the outer boroughs?

Yes there are pictures of the Bronx and Brooklyn. It looks like the South Bronx, Mott Haven, maybe. The Brooklyn pictures could be either Bushwick, Williamsburg or Bed-Stuy.

By the late 1970s the city was literally falling apart. The infrastructure was in serious decline. The West Side Hwy was condemned after a partial collapse (1977?). The Manhattan Bridge was in such bad shape subway service was shut down for many years. The Williamsburg bridge was no better. Remember that the city was broke and barely avoided a state takeover in 1975.

Man, that era (which I was born into) sure is depressing.

How about a more uplifting photo from that time period?

As a native who was old enough to experience those bleak times, it infuriates me when some transplant who has only lived NYC in the post-Guiliani era complains about how sterile and white washed NYC is, while decrying what a jerk Guilani/Bloomberg was/is. Your transplanted-ass would not be here if Guiliani did not clean this city up.

Totally agree. Several nice parts of NYC today were a $hit hole back when I was a kid in the 80's. When I hear these idiots say that Giuliani took away the charm, the grittiness, or the soul of NYC I just shake my head. There are two types of people that claim that NYC was a better place before Giuliani cleaned it up, 1. Thugs/Criminals 2. people that were too young to know what it was like.

Williamsburg, Fort Greene, Clinton Hills, Union Square, LES, All of Harlem, All of the Bronx and several other areas were dangerous places to be at night. It really changed a lot for the better and people should be grateful for that. There was nothing good about the city back then.

The picture with the blue building on fire is Williamsburg. I was able to make out the street sign (Driggs Avenue).
