Oh okay, gotcha. I was just thinking along the lines that if the rapist knew the chances of it being reported were highly likely, then that would deter their behavior-guess not

Three Card Montes.... I really can't believe that people still fall for that crap, it boggles the mind. Now the question here is why is a 14 y/o carrying $900 in midtown Manhattan? This what I mean when I advise folks to be aware of their surroundings and use common sense, unreal... or perhaps a bunch of BS.

THANKS-TAKING

With regards to crime rates, remember NYC is obviously far more diverse in more ways than one compared with most small towns in the USA. Even if the overall crime stats per capita show a small town higher... most likely the worst parts of NYC are going to be far worse than the worst parts of a small town. Thing with 'per capita', especially with a city like NYC, is it includes those masses of rich people and safe areas that 99% of people (Americans AND immigrants) cannot afford to live in.

Still the crime rate probably says something, because I'm guessing NYC has a massive increase in population during the day? I mean the actual number of residents is probably significantly lower than how many people are actually in NYC at a given time, which can make per capita stats look worse than they are. Like for example in San Francisco... there was a big drug bust there recently, around 100 drug dealers... of course it gets added to their crime stats, but the fact is most of the criminals didn't even live in SF.

If so, why do you put up with it? Why not move to a cleaner, quieter place where people treat each other with respect? Do you get depressed living in a city where you see a million people per day and you do not know anyone?!

I came to the Lower East Side of Manhattan 62 years ago, then moved to the Bronx, Brooklyn, and now live on Staten Island. Four boroughs out of five, and have never been raped, mugged, attacked, assaulted, or otherwise. As a New Yorker living among 9 million people, one learns to mind one's own business, stay away from unsavory characters, learn quickly where crime is taking place, and stay away from those neighborhoods. Protect one's private property, do not flash money or jewelry. And even when one is in better neighborhoods, always be on the alert. Do I sound a little paranoid? Maybe, but that is the price one pays for having a multitude of choices, everything at the fingertips, top museaums, restaurants, top enterntainment, top shopping, with people from all over the world, who speak over 200 languages, etc. THAT IS WHY IT IS CALLED THE CENTER OF THE WORLD! By the way, I have traveled a lot throught the US, as well as Europe, Asia, South America, and the Caribbean.
Do I need to say anymore?

a tree falls in the forest but you didn't witness it, did it make noise when it fell? just because you've never been a victim or witnessed a crime doesn't mean that it doesn't happen

Well, I was a kid living in a good upper-middle class neighborhood and never had problems, even though it was during the worst crime wave in years(1990-1993). The worst that happened to my family was my mom getting pickpocketed. She was only carrying maybe a $10 bill and didn't even have a wallet on her. But I'd say a lot of people got pickpocketed or mugged when we lived there because we were there during that time period. Use common sense and you're less likely to become a victim. We knew better than to board an empty subway car, go anywhere near the slums, and avoided touristy/crowded areas.

I actually don't get depressed seeing millions, or thousands of strangers; no matter where I live there are friends to be made at church, school, the neighborhood, and work. I'd probably get more depressed living in a small town. What saves me in Utah are the people and closeness of national parks and good hiking.

And you are right on that, but the point I am trying to make is that there is a multitude of people living here that have never been a victim, and that, yes, you can live in NYC, and if you use GOOD JUDGEMENT, and follow COMMON SENSE, you will avoid becoming a victim. NOW, it seems to me that you looked at the forest, but failed to see the trees.

This is called "Superman Syndrome". If you think you can control the world, you are deeply flawed. Anything can happen to anybody, anywhere. In New York walking out of your apt. every morning is taking another chance.

Remember: steam pipe explosion, mad gunman, "knife wielding psycho", road rage, drunk drivers, construction esp. older buildings, fires, rapists, drunks, druggies, gangmembers, subway dangers, terrorist attacks.

That's a list all New Yorkers carry in their minds. You never know
